12-02 Bsktbll – WCS Crusaders vs Charleston Townies – 79

Saturday, February 11, 2012.Recap: No. 15 C’Town 87, No. 19 WC 69.By Brendan Hall..CHARLESTOWN, Mass. — At this time last year, Charlestown made the trek West, down Route 146, to deliver a haymaker to a Whitinsville Christian squad considered the state’s tallest lineup. ..This afternoon, the Crusaders came East to Bunker Hill, with a different look for the Townies — smaller, quicker, more surgical — and the result was very nearly a different outcome. The Crusaders hung with Charlestown through three quarters, before the Townies pulled away in the fourth, outscoring Whitinsville 31-14 in the final frame en route to an 87-69 victory. .."That team’s very good, I thought that was the best shooting team we saw," Charlestown head coach Edson Cardoso said. "They’re very well balanced, with a real good point guard, big man, two-guard, so I knew coming into this game it was going to be a battle. I told the guys, ‘You’re going to see a team like this in the state tournament, eventually down the line." ..The Townies (14-3), played just seven due to health (Jawhari Dawan-Abdullah, stomach bug) and off the court issues (Gary Braham, suspension). But they saw all five of their regular starters reach double-figures, with senior point guard Rony Fernandez (26 points, four assists) leading the way. Senior forward Tyrik Jackson (12 points, 13 rebounds) came up big on the glass again, while Tyrese Hoxter (16 points, seven assists), Omar Orriols (13 points) and Iser Barnes (12) contributed some big shots from the perimeter to keep the defense stretched out. ..But early on, the Crusaders (12-2) gave them fits with the methodical way they broke through the Townie’s 2-3 zone with some of the most disciplined and precise ball movement they’d seen in a while. Junior point guard Colin Richey (23 points) funneled the offense down to the baseline, finding a player planted right in the heart of the zone and kicking to either the baseline or either wing. ..Whitinsville shot nearly 40 percent from the field, getting good looks from the short side from Tyler VandenAkker (12 points, eight rebounds) and Jesse Dykstra. Grant Brown (10 points) came up with some big shots from the perimeter as well. .."We decided to extend a little bit more on the short corner, because they hit about four shots in a row from the short corner," Cardoso said. "We also decided to have the opposite guard extend even more on shooter No. 2 (Tim Dufficey). So we made some extensions in the second half, did a little better job — not a great job, but it helped us get the victory." ..To start the fourth quarter, Barnes completed a 6-0 run by ripping the ball out of his defender’s hands at midcourt and landing a breakaway layup. A few possessions later, Hoxter found Jackson underneath the rim for an easy tip-in and 68-59 advantage. ..Then with 1:37 to go, sophomore Taris Wilson hit the first of two monster breakaway slams, this one making it 76-63 to essentially put the game in hand. ..Hot from the field: The Townies outrebounded the Crusaders 16-7 in the final frame, giving way to many key transition points that helped ice the lead and the win. From the glass, WC still held a slim 35-33 advantage. ..But down at the other end, the Townies had a terrific night from the field, shooting nearly 58 percent overall. That was aided by a 7-for-17 effort from three-point range, including three 3′s each from Fernandez and Orriols. ..Praise for Richey: Last season, New Mission head coach Cory McCarthy was throwing around high praise for the then-sophomore Richey, calling him "a suburban kid that plays urban". ..Consider Cardoso another Boston City League coach that’s a fan. .."He’s tough," Cardoso said. "He’s one of the toughest guards coming out of his league, and I think he’s going give a lot of teams problems in the state tournament, because how do you stop a kid like that?" ..Turning point? Following last season’s loss to Charlestown in its home gym, WC coach Jeff Bajema greeted his players in the locker room and told them, "Guys, we can win states." ..Sure enough, the Crusaders never lost another game the rest of the way, picking up their first Division 3 state title since 2005 at the DCU Center in Worcester. After that game, Bajema spoke to reporters about how much the whitewashing by Charlestown seasoned them for what to expect in the state tournament. ..Given how much more competitive the Crusaders were this time around, could this be seen as another momentum shift? .."Hopefully, a game like this will lead us to better things," Bajema said. "But we’ve got a tough one Tuesday (against Holy Name), so we’ll see."

One of the rare non-Apple laptops seen in an otherwise cool park full of cool people

This woman was typing away on a laptop computer … alas, it was not an Apple Powerbook. But maybe she doesn’t know any better. Just think: if she had been typing on a Mac, her photo probably would have been published a thousand times by now!
*****************
Late in the afternoon on the last day in March 2009, I walked into Bryant Park, which is located behind the New York Public Library, between 41st and 42nd Street, facing Avenue of the Americas. There were several people reading and basking in the sun, a couple people typing on their laptop computers, and one chess game underway. I spent about half an hour wandering around to see what looked photo-worthy, and then wandered off to get some dinner…
*****************
Note: even though this photo was taken in March 2009, Karen Bryan claims to have published it in a Nov 13, 2008 blog titled “‘The Future of the Travel Blog’ Presentation, Travel Blog Camp, London 11 November 2008." J Dilla aka Jay Dee R.I.P

J Dilla R.I.P (1974-2006)
After quietly serving as a member of A Tribe Called Quest’s production team, the Ummah, and scoring hits for Busta Rhymes, De La Soul and Pharcyde, Detroit producer Jay Dee became known as a major hip-hop prospect by the late 90s. The hip-hop community took notice of his no-frills, breakbeat-heavy hip-hop style as he helped craft albums for Common (Like Water for Chocolate), Q Tip (Amplified), and the debut for his own group Slum Village (Fan-Tas-Tic Vol. 1).
By the time of his major-label debut with Slum Village’s Fantastic, Vol. 2 in 2000, Jay Dee was recognized as one of hip-hop’s most admired and desired producers. Jay Dee’s debut as a solo artist came in 2001 with the single “Fuck the Police” and the album "Welcome to Detroit" on BBE.
After assuming the name J Dilla, he joined the Stones Throw roster in 2003, forming Jaylib with fellow producer/MC Madlib, and relocated from Detroit to Los Angeles. The duo released the “The Red” b/w “The Official” in 2003, followed by the album "Champion Sound" and a tour the following spring.
When Pharrell Williams was asked about his favorite hip-hop producer during a BET interview in 2004 he replied, “You may not know his name, but J Dilla, Jay Dee from Detroit.” Indeed, the interviewer didn’t know – J Dilla has eluded the spotlight, preferring the studio to the stage or video. His work is mostly released by independents, for different groups, and under different names, but his core audience and cult status has grown. His pirated beat tapes (instrumentals, raw working material for rappers) have become something of urban legend, as their circulation from hand to hand and over the internet have led to a black market of Dilla beat tape collectors.
Despite contributing two tracks to Common’s career-resurrecting "Be" this year, it’s been a quiet time for Dilla. So where has he been? A cover story in URB (Mar 2004) made public his recent, sudden struggle with illness, and recently rumors began circulating again about health emergencies and hospitalization. Asked about this in XXL (June 2005), Dilla himself partially confirmed these stories. “The rumors were like, ‘Jay Dee is dead’ and all that, but I was just in the hospital. I was in ICU, with all types of tubes. It was crazy.”
Working both from his home studio and while hospitalized – from a portable sound system including turntable, samplers, and small boxes of vinyl brought in and out from visitors – Dilla continued making music at his usual non-stop pace, circulating beats to MCs, and coming up with the foundation of what would become "Donuts".
Begun simply enough as a production beat tape, "Donuts" evolved into a project as unusual as the environment in which it was created. It’s a hip-hop album without MC’s. An album of electronic music that at times sounds like a 70s soul mixtape. Its abrupt transitions and numerous interludes might make you think you’re rapidly turning the radio dial in some strange city where every station is programmed by a certain Detroit hip-hop producer. "Donuts" is J Dilla doing what he does best – crafting hip-hop, soul and electronic music into his own sound.
And a few have asked, “What’s up with the title?” Easy explanation. Dilla likes donuts.

Earth Cuisine for Longevity

Image by Barry Gourmet and Raw
My Personal Experience with my diet:
Writen by Barry Gourmet & Raw © copyright Aug. 24 2011
Having a new lease on life with my slimVegan body, and feeling good ,with tons of energy I continued to abstain from eating any kind of animal even though many Korean people love their barbecued beef but in much smaller portions compared to Americans.
However near the end of the 4th year of my 100 percent strict Vegan Cleansing Diet I felt that my energy should be much stronger than it was, and as usual I listened to my body and paid close attention to it.
I was living and working in Soul Korea at the time during the early 90s and I was burning a lot of calories at the time enjoying my new life by vigorously ice skating every evening at Lotte World Ice rink and on week ends mountain climbing and hiking with my friend Mr Park.
I will never forget my Friend Mr. Park and his gracious family for introducing me to many fine Traditional Korean foods to enjoy.
Even though we are the same age and had almost the same diet I noticed that Mr. Parks Stamina and endurance, climbing mountains was better than mine and his dieting was just only a little bit different than mine when we would eat out together . Back then I was working as an Animator Supervisor in Cartoon film production for Television, and having been trained to observe people and their movements and habits I made mental notes of every thing Mr. Park was eating doing ,and saying. I did not have enough time and money to make a double blind test study on 2 or 3 large groups of people so I just studied Mr. Park instead.
We where eating a Korean style of Macrobiotic plant based raw foods and some cooked and some high enzyme raw fermented foods as well like Miso Soups, Kim chi, sour vegetables with herbal Green teas and some times a bit of Korean Rice Wine. Included with our meals was boiled brown rice with different legumes Tofu, sesame sauce and seed, asian pickles, with fruit plates as a snack. Some times I would share a Korean Vegetarian style fried pancake with Mr. Park. And sometimes Mr. Park would surprise me, and place an Acid forming Egg on his Bi Bem Bap!! Thats a popular Korean Style bowl of rice and vegetables. On occasion but not often enough I would sprout and grow wheat grass in my hotel room.
What I notice Mr. Park doing that was different from me was his love for Raw Honey , Bee Pollen and fresh Raw Korean Red and White Ginseng Root mixed together. Honey and Bee Pollen was animal so it was off my list.
And another thing that Mr. Park would do was sometimes on occasion he would add a bit of Fish to his vegetables or a bit of beef or pork. I would never touch the last 2 but I know especially pork is very popular in most Asian countries. Other than that we where on the same diet that lasted for at least 2 years before I finished my job with the Walt Disney Company and flew back to California USA for a check up with my Natural path Doctor ND and Nutritionalist.
When my lab blood work came back I was SHOCKED and surprised to discover the following results?
Even though I felt a 100 times better in the past after losing all my excess weight , I still did not feel at my optimum in energy levels.
My blood count looked good except for the following result:
I had Anemia with a low red cel blood count .
I was deficient in Vitamin B 12
And I was low in my Essential Omega 3 Fatty Acids
My Doctor gave me a Vitamin B -12 shot that I did not like because I have a thing about being poked with needles . My Doctor subscribed Sublingual B -12 liquid under my tongue and subscribed Iron supplements and told me to start eating fish for my essential Omega 3 fatty Acids.
I found out later that I was not alone , and that other people experienced the same thing.
Did you ever see the Movie or Video called “ Super Charge Me “ directed and acted by Jenna Norwood?
Well after only 30 days of strict raw vegan dieting and remember mine was almost 4 years straight, her Doctor after looking at her blood lab results informed Jenna that her red blood cell count was lower and borderline Anemic.
She called David Wolf who is an Expert Nutritionalist and Food Researcher about her findings.
David , advised her to take more green vegetable juices ,especially Parsley,Dandelion, and Spinach. And to eat more dark red cherries , and more dark red berries of every kind that is rich in the mineral iron. David is right of course as all the above mentioned foods ,will supply the body with dietary organic Iron to correct the Anemia. At the time I did not have David with me to consult with, and so I had to figure things out a lot on my own over the years ,and research a lot about how to best keep my vitamin B -12 at normal range and my Omega 3 Fatty Acids optimized.
Even if a person eats enough foods rich in Iron like , Beef, Fish, Poultry, and for Vegetarians ,Beans, and all kinds of fruits including dry fruits, and green leafy vegetables like Spinach things can still go wrong if you sway away from NATURE and nibble on that man made processed glue thats advertised in print and media.
Seliac Disease or condition, plus Gluten Intolerance, or people that are allergic to Gluten grains , like Wheat ,Rye,and Barley will have a hard time absorbing the mineral Iron even if they think they are on a good diet. Grains normally along with a few root vegetables like potatoes are very starchy foods and offer less bio available nutrition to the body as compared to vegetables growing above the ground.( Go for a lot of Dark Greens rich in Iron)
Crones Disease or condition, which is a chronic inflammatory auto immune disorder that affects the small intestine and other parts of the intestinal tract can cause Iron deficiency leading to Anemia as well.
Even parasitic infections can cause iron deficient anemia as some invading parasites are capable of feeding off of your blood supply.
Parasites live in all meats of every kind so my recommendation is to cook the meats well, and to eat the wild game meats as condiments and not as the main course at any meal.
It takes a lot longer to properly chew any meat until it becomes liquid in your mouth , and on top of this it even gets more challenging for us to digest the meat proteins in comparison to plant based proteins. The meat takes longer than any other food group out there for time of digestion, and transit time through your body, and if this isn’t enough, all meats are very Acid Forming inside our body and if eaten in excess could cause an imbalance with our intestinal friendly flora bacteria living in our gut, that would compromise our immune system .And I could say a whole lot more why we should not eat so much meat ,and I have to save it for another article because ,there would not be enough space left on this page to do so. So trust me on this , a lot can go wrong with eating to much land meat in our diet, including sea food that is farm raised.
Wild fish in moderation agreed with me ,such as Salmon, Mackerel, Sardines and Herring.
I personally do not eat any Beef or Pork and very rarely any poultry with their eggs.( And if I did it would be open free range and organic , chickens or ducks running around some villagers back yard living a free life like nature intended . I purchase my wild sea food from my local Sea GypsyVillage.
People living in the 5 Blue Zones noted for longevity live on a Plant Based Whole Food Diet that includes a little bit of wild free range protein as a condiment only. With their primarily vegetarian plant based meals with much of their diet RAW they eat small meals spaced out.
The founder of the Blue Zones ,Mr Dan Buettner with his Expert team of Scientists supported by the National Geographic Society Magazine, in 2004 made a discovery that in my opinion should, and must wake up every person living in our modern day society, to take notice and to act upon and learn about LIFE from the people living in the Blue Zones around the world.
The 5 Blue Zone locations around the world now famous for peoples Longevity ,Good Health, and Happiness are the islands of Okinawa Japan, the island of Sardinia Italy, Nicoya Peninsula Costa Rica,Loma Linda (Seventh Day Adventists), California USA, and the island of Ikaria, Greece.
I find it interesting that the 3 Blues zones that have a lot in common that contribute to the peoples longevity in Okinawa Japan, Sardinia Italy, and Lorma Linda California, are as follows.
The Family is priority and has great purpose in their lives.
Non Smokers, as Centenarians (People who live to be one hundred years or older)from the studies do not typically smoke.
A Plant Based Diet for life is primarily their choice for consumption of plants from nature.
Constant every day moderate physical activity with rest periods.
A strong sense of community and purpose ,with all people engaged in social activity.
Legumes or Beans are commonly consumed.
From my own experience and observations starting over 35 years ago when I first visited Thailand, I was overwhelmed with curiosity as to why all the Thais that I observed where thin ,lean and in good shape. And I can remember at that time that I was self conscious of my own body being very overweight from consuming the processed Standard American Diet (SAD). Back then not previously having the experience of traveling overseas ,it really hit me because I thought that it was a normal thing in society to have a certain population segment to be overweight or even obese as I was just a young man looking for adventure in a new country.
The Thai people back then primarily ate a traditional Thai diet of Rice, Noodles, lots of Vegetables, Fruits and seafood that would delighted any persons taste buds. But what really got my tasted buds jumping around like Mexican Jumping beans on a hot stove, where the hot Thai Chili Peppers that every Foreign Tourist will experience sooner or later as Thais will serve it HOT unless you order it otherwise. (Always keep a big glass of cold ice water near by)
I also noticed in my travels to up country in Thailand even today that life is really simple and the Thai people continue to eat the traditional fare of Greens with Rice and fresh fruits with the usual spicy hot dishes that they are famous for especially in the North East of the country. On my last visit to the up country in Thailand’s North East I witnessed interesting bits of edible protein ,very popular with the villagers, such as Beatles,Grasshoppers,Ants,Lizards and Frogs.
I gave a pass on the first four, but I did try the Frog Soup and it was tasty and not bad at all.Remember that these people are still eating from nature, with their Fruits and lots of Vegetable Greens and less processed food from out of a box. My Thai wife name Am continues to practice her traditional Thai North East diet today but does get distracted now and then, and falls prey to temptation from processed fast foods , only because we now live on a tourist island with lots of out side influences, but that is another story.
Today after my first trip 35 years ago to Thailand I definitely see and notice a negative change of health in some of the Thai People in general in comparison of 3 decades ago ,that also affects other developing countries that I have travelled to as well. In Bangkok and Phuket I see much more Obesity and over weight problems in general in comparison to the past, and when I talk with western trained Thai Md’s ,they all agree with me, for this point of view. At one time , I read a report a few years back that Thailand was the country along time ago with the lowest rates of Cancer for any country , anywhere in the world ! Now today this disease is going up along with Diabetes and other chronic ailments as well. Last reported the Thai government wanted to crack down on all processed foods that contain Hydrogenated Fats to protect their people from Diabetes ,that I learned from in a radio announcement.
What I have learned from all of this is very simple. You may be surprised but Yes I later updated and adopted a diet from the 5 Blue Zones and tailored them to suite my own life style,to learn from the information and to implement what works for me .I guarantee that in time you will see and feel a positive difference in your own life and well being as well, with time and effort on your part. I know this because I have been practicing a type of my own tailored Blue Zone life style, by shear fate ,and good fortune, and discovered on my own, that a Blue Zone diet and life style, really does work!
From 1979 through 1990 living in Los Angeles California ,a close friend of mine influenced my eating habits and life style to help me to make a profound positive change to my unhealthy living and obesity. My friend was a Seventh Day Adventist follower ,and I still remember the day that we spent together on her older brothers family farm that grew and sold the very popular Apple Pears to the Asian market place.
Other positive influences that helped me where the teachings of Asian Macrobiotics, Mediterranean Diets, the Thai Cuisine with all its wonderful herbs and spices ,and the Raw California Cuisine diet , along with Anne Wigmores Wheat Grass movement .All of these Plant Based programs helped me to make a healthier change that required many steps for me to implement ,and to finally take back my health. Believe me I know that it was not so easy to do this, with all the every day food temptations out there, such as the advertising, the peer pressures, the sounds , visuals, smells and addictions of processed foods .It was literally overwhelming to me, for a long time during those days. But with good planning ,persistence, and acquired knowledge I eventually beat the odds that where stacked against me and you can too.
The 5 Basic Blue Zone Diet Models at a Glance:
Island of Okinawa Japan Diet:
Their diet is heavy on grains of all kinds , with fish and vegetables, but light on land meat and dairy products. The Okinawans consume fermented foods such as Tofu,Miso Soup, and Seaweeds. They eat many different herbs and greens including Bitter Mellon.
Many small servings of Green and Yellow vegetables, including Sweet Potatoes, with a small amount of fish less than half a serving at one sitting per day maybe 2 or 3 times per week.
The Okinawans consume more than the general population of Japan in the way of Soy including fermented Soy such as Miso Soup, and other legumes plus sprouts green onions and Green Tea ,and Mugwort Tea beverages including a strong distilled Rice Wine called Awamori.
Pork may be consumed, but very rarely would eggs or any dairy or the last two could be completely omitted from their diet.
They also enjoy Mushrooms such as Shiitake ,Turmeric Root , Peppers and Fennel.
This diet looks and sounds like the Macrobiotic diet along with my Seventh Day Adventist program, that I followed more than 30 years ago to lose all my excess weight .I can say that it does work. An important note is the Okinawans never overeat at one sitting, compared to many other cultures. To recap ,the Plant Based diet is very heavy on Leafy Greens ,Assortment of other vegetables and fruits, and whole grains, with some fish, fermented soy, green tea , and a natural Rice Wine in moderation. Okinawa Japan has more Centenarians of people living over one hundred years of age, per capita than any other country in the world today.
Okinawans know how to live right, for proven Longevity.
Island of Sardinia Italy Diet:
Sardinia is located in the Mediterranean off the coast of Italy and is reported to have the longest living Men in the world today. Sardinians enjoy high fiber whole grain sour breads that contain probiotic live bacteria that support their intestinal health. Their Cheeses are grass fed from sheep that would supply Omega 3 fatty acids, that would not be found from live stock that is grain or corn fed that we find in the USA and other countries around the world.
Sardinia is famous for their rich dark wines , organic and unique to their island ,referred to as the black wine boasting the highest anti oxidants of any known wine today. The fermentation process is longer than most other wines explaining the high anti oxidant protection. The important thing to remember is that they drink their wine with their meals and not separately.
The islanders enjoy seafood of squid, tuna, lobster, and sardines in moderation. They also enjoy lots of Leafy Greens ,Beans ,and an assortment of different vegetables, with tomatoes, and herbs such as Mint,Myrtle,Basil,Oregano, and of course the King of Herbs Garlic.
Nuts are enjoyed often. The Mediterranean Diet is well documented for good health and longevity, not to mention how delicious many of the recipes are as well.
Loma Linda California USA Diet:
The Seventh Day Adventists of Loma Linda California enjoy exceptional health and longevity that is part of their living standards with their faith and strong community support. The people of Loma Linda are primarily Vegetarian and enjoy a Plant Based whole food diet rich in various Fruits and Vegetables. Their diet is rich in nuts and beans. And they may eat meat very little and sparingly. The interesting part is what they do not eat. They will not eat pork, shellfish, drink no alcohol, and smoke no tobacco. They avoid coffee ,tea, and all soft drink beverages containing caffeine. We can all learn something good from the healthy life style and diet of Loma Linda California.
Nicoya Peninsula Costa Rica:
It seems to me that the diet of Nicoya is more fatty than the other 4 Blue Zones but other than that , other factors could play in their good fortune of Longevity, such as being the closest of the Blue Zones ,to our earths equator and having fresh air and vitamin D tropical sunshine all year round. They enjoy Rice,Fried Plantain,Onions, and meat of chicken or beef. Also Eggs ,Beans, and Cabbage or Lettuce salad sprinkled with Lemon Juice or Salt.
Squash,Corn ,Rice ,Beans, and Leafy Greens are all very high in fiber and they eat lightly and enjoy their community and out door gardens and social community life.
Island of Ikaria Greece Diet:
A wonderful Mediterranean diet of Leafy Greens ,Grapes,Figs,Pumpkin and Squashes with herbs of Fennel,Oregano and St. Johns Wort to just name a few. Olive Oil is big on the island that is used on many of their meals that would include wild mushrooms,Bean Soups,Chestnuts ,Almonds, Apples, Pears, all eaten in season and locally produced from gardens on the island.
Locally made Organic Red Wine is enjoyed with meals with Whole grains and potatoes in moderation .The islanders of Ikaria Greece enjoy a big assortment of whole food vegetables and fruits.Fish from the sea is prominent in their diet taken on occasion.
Raw Goat milk yogurt with raw honey is part of their diet as well.
I find it interesting that 2 out of the 5 Blue Zones are Mediterranean Diets.
To recap the 5 Blue Zone Diets: They are all Primarily Vegetarian and Whole Food,Plant Based in Nature.Their diet consists of complex carbohydrates directly from NATURE and not the simple carbohydrates found in processed foods so prevalent in our modern day society. Their foods are in season and locally grown Organically and they eat nutrient dense calories that are very high in fiber, and rich with natures anti oxidants. With food like this their top soil would have to be properly amended organically and their crops would be well diversified. A lot of them have their own garden plots and therefore they are connected with NATURE. Dark Leafy Greens and Fruits are eaten by all 5 Blue Zones locations.
And many of them incorporate some kind of fermented probiotic natural food into their diet plan as well. Their diets are richer in the minerals Magnesium and essential Omega 3 Fatty Acids plus trace minerals and vitamins that are officiant in a modern fast food society that we know of today.
The people of the 5 Blue Zones truly are living Earth Friendly as nature intended.
“Would the Breakfast with Barry Gourmet & Raw Photo qualify as a Blue Zone Breakfast?”
The Blue Zone Diet plan for longevity is just part of the picture ,although a very important one.
Dan Buettner with his team of researchers discovered 9 more important factors to complete the picture for the secret of Longevity as follows.
1- Make natural movements with your body every day . Examples are gardening, walking, swimming in nature, bicycling, dancing, having social fun playing , hiking, and stretching.
2- Having a Purpose in Life. Enjoying the work that you do. Optimistic about your daily activities.
3- Not working to hard , slowing down , and taking things in stride.
4- Not eating to much at one sitting. Eating only enough to be satisfied but not to full.
5- Eating lots of various vegetables but not to much meat.Eating often socially together.
6- Having the occasional glass of natural organic Red Wine or some home made Rice Wine that supplies high antioxidants and cultures.
7- Belonging to a community,or having a social network.
8- Sharing personal Beliefs or Spirituality.
9- Making Family a priority .(Strong Family connections through out)
Barrys Health and Weight Loss Tip:
The reason that I chose the 5 Blue Zones to study as a relevant topic for health and weight loss is very simple. The people of Okinawa Japan,Sardinia Italy, Ikaria Greece, Linda Loma California, and Nicoya Peninsula Costa Rica have been living and eating their natural diet for years , decades, and generations long before fad diets became fashionable. I believe lessons can be learned here from these people that truly live well past 100 years of their life ,and they are living testaments of Real Health Happiness and Longevity.
I believe when Dan Buettner wrote his 2 books , entitled “Thrive” finding Happiness the Blue Zones Way and the second book “ And the Blue Zones” lessons for Living Longer from the people who’ve Lived the Longest was his way of sounding the alarm.I believe Dan wanted to help many people living in the modern world to look and think about their own personal diet choices that may not be working so well for health and longevity?
It really dose not matter where you live. You actually do not have to live in a Blue Zone to achieve Happiness and Vibrant Good Health in your life. In fact you can adopt a Blue Zone way of life right where you are living right now today. It can be in steps or stages , like replacing processed packaged goods with real food from nature like fruits and vegetables, and using the internet for recipe ideas as there are thousands of them out there on line.It just takes a little of your time and effort ,and discovery ,to embrace the journey, to better lasting disease free health and desired weight loss and longevity.

Is the island of Phuket Thailand a Blue Zone ?
Phuket island is the largest island in the Kingdom of Thailand located in the south facing the Andaman Sea on the east side of the country. The weather is good all year round with scattered rains during the green season and bright Vitamin D sunshine through out the tourist high season. November to April for six months of the year is the time when the sea is calm and clear with good visibility for swimming and looking at coral marine life, but accommodation pricing is a bit higher at this time of year. But September 27 to the 5th of October offers a very special event on the island. The Phuket Vegetarian Festival is not to be missed. How did it all start? About 150 years ago ,a large community of Chinese Tin Mine workers ,became very ill from some kind of epidemic disease, and many died. Realizing that they forgot to practice their belief of paying homage to their Gods they decided to sent one of their own to China for help .An entourage of a High Chinese religious committee returned to Phuket island to bring back the missing Chinese culture of respect to their nine Empire Gods. They practiced vegetarianism with out any disease fatalities and soon adopted a yearly festival known today as the Phuket Vegetarian Festival.
So since then they have celebrated every year the Vegetarian Festival on Phuket island with the possessions starting at all the prominent Chinese Temples in Phuket Town.
The commitments of the Phuket people are as follows for this Festival.
1- Cleanliness of the body during the Vegetarian Festival.
2- Wear white during the Festival includes shirt and trousers.
3-Behave proper physically and mentally with out any conflicts.
4-Clean kitchen utensils not to used by others who do not participate in the Festival.
5- Avoid eating any meat of any kind.
6-Avoid having Sex.
7-Avoid any Alcohol
8-People in morning should not participate in the Festival, it is discouraged.
9-Pregnant women and menstruating women should not attend ceremonies.
Yes the Chinese Thais can be very superstitious in their beliefs, but this sense of community is what keeps their culture alive and well, and I have to admit that I do see a lot of very old people walking around at this time of year.
The nice thing is at any time of the year here on Phuket island it is not hard to find a VeganVegetarian Restaurant that even serves brown rice with lots of leafy greens and other treats. Some of their plant based dishes are world famous like the spicy Papaya Salad (Som Dum) Suki Yaki which is a sort of do it your self heated vegetables in water with your choice of fish and land meats with salads on the side. Then there is a dish called “Can-om Jeen” which is noodles with your choice of different curry sauces and served with a big plate of different vegetables for you to choose from.
Every where you can see in certain sections of the island loads of Plant Garden Nurseries that sell organically grown edibles and ornamentals. One time I saw an elderly Phuket Man siting at a park bench with his bicycle looking at the monkeys playing in a tropical marine mangrove.I stopped to greet him. You know the feeling when you see a person and it just seems right to be sociable ,even if that person is a perfect stranger. His name was Mr. Lee and he could not speak any English so I spoke to him in my best pigeon Thai language and it turned out that he was 72 years old and looking very fit and lean despite his weathered face. We both rode our mountain bikes to my place for Tea and Fruit, and then all around the southern end of the island. I was so impressed with Mr. Lees endurance climbing the hills and his easy and happy disposition with everything in his life.
When you look closer at the Thai Traditional Diet ingredients ,it is not hard to see why many of the Thai people can be so healthy and look so good in their advanced years if they stay on such a diet.
Where I live there are many Thai Temples in my area and in particular there is one temple that is very well known, respected and famous among the Thai People. This place is home to a senior Thai Buddhist Monk named Lung Pu Supha and his birthday is at 115 years old and he could very well be the oldest man living today in the world. He is so respected and revered by the Thai people for his long life and his good deeds and cultural wisdom for the people.
Even if Phuket Thailand is not a Blue Zone , or where you live is not listed as a Blue Zone the important thing is that we can make personal choices in our life to learn from elders that do live very long and healthy lives .We can learn from them.

[Yu Hwang Wu's Language Essay] Study Strategy & Tips for Success in ’2011 College Entrance Exam’
Even before the lingering storm of college entrance exam for 2010 academic year is gone, the 2011 academic year college scholastic ability test already entered its count-down. To-be high school 3rd graders testees and repeaters are facing a period left with not even ‘D-300′ that they should jump-start preparation in earnest for college scholastic ability test.
In particular, as the 2011 academic year college entrance exam is the last college entrance test which will present questions from the same contents and scope as earlier college scholastic ability tests, competitions are expected fierce and tensions are rising among the testees. On top of that, candidates screening methods of colleges grew much more diverse, and ‘the 2011 college entrance exam’ is demanding even more tightly established test strategy than ever before.
In order to shatter the ‘weights’ by the ‘vagueness’ on what and how to start and college entrance policy etc different from last year, we set out for the support of to-be-testees with the ‘Study Strategy & Tips for Success in ’2011 College Entrance Exam’ with the help of the president of ‘Yu Hwang Wu Language Essay’.
▲Firmly establish the goal such as college and major that suit your career vision and aptitude!
That is by all means the first thing you are to do before jump-starting college scholastic ability test mode. When your goals are not firmly set up, your preparation is very liable to fall prostrate not finding any clue after all. Hence, you are advised to find out the aptitude and career path of your own, check your own conditions, set up goal by deciding on five to six colleges and majors that you want to enter, and then prepare for the college entrance exam.
Once your goal is thus established, you are on your way to find the screening requirements that suit your conditions and set up the exam strategy for entrance to your desired college and major. Of course, on such basis, sufficiently feasible specific study plan will also need be set up as well.
▲Devise study strategy by the periods for the college scholastic ability test that is not even 300 days ahead!
The study strategy required for the testees by the major periods is the method of using the time until the real test most effectively. Without setting up strategy period-specifically like winter vacation, 1st semester, simulated test, summer vacation and 2nd semester etc, you cannot but fall into a pitfall of feeling monotonous throughout the test preparing period or doing only skin-deep study on the lessons that you have accomplished so far.
From March when the 1st semester starts, it is best to proceed with preparation for occasional application openings strategically with focus on regular application opportunities. To look at application with mid upper level, preparation for 3rd grade 1st semester intramural transcript also should endeavored. During summer vacation that offers long study period with the highest study efficiency among test preparation periods, you might seriously determine whether to apply for occasional openings, and set up and prepare for the goal by it. This period is also the days when you finally decide on the elective courses of college scholastic ability test. In September which is the period to jump-start full scale preparation for college scholastic ability test, you really need simulated test based study. It means you are demanded to be accustomed to the study of college scholastic ability test type. You just need to arrange the question trends and types by solving previously presented questions of college scholastic ability test by the areas, and checking incorrect answers is a simply must.
▲Set up plan for occasional application openings in tune with the extended opportunities of occasional screening!
The quota for 2011 academic year occasional application opening is estimated 230,000 or so which is an increase of 10,000 or so over last year. It means occasional openings comprise the majority, which represents over 60% of the entire application quota. Hence, to testees, setting up plan for occasional openings is not a consideration done ‘if necessary’ but is a ‘must’.
In particular, the criteria of occasional special openings that screened only with transcripts and assay previously are anticipated to diversify to more options like local balanced development, local leading talents, special talent holder, excellent potential ability holder, and principal recommendation etc, so testees can approach one step further toward success in college entrance only if they check the major contents of each opening and prepare for openings that are just right for themselves.
In addition, let’s not forget to check that colleges are increasingly conducting aptitude tests in occasional application openings. As aptitude test presents questions in objective style unlike assay test, aptitude test can be applied with relatively less burden for testees of intermediate level or lower intermediate level.
▲Read out the Admission Officer System, and if it is not for advantage, just forget it.
The colleges that execute admission officer system in occasional application opening include 110 or so colleges like Seoul Nat’l University and Korea University etc, and recruiting quota, 35,000, doubled that of last year. It means one out of six students admitted in occasional application screening this year enter college through admission officer system. Looking into the screening contents of such admission officer system closely is also a way to success in college entrance.
However, do not swept away in the mood of admission officer system extension. In particular, once you find it disadvantageous to you after grasping the admission officer system screening, do not struggle to manage to make up required documents but it would be wise to forget it. In other words, efficient for success in college entrance is to solidify your inside by taking care of intramural transcript and college scholastic ability test etc instead of preparing to meet the conditions admission officer system requirements.
▲Maintain regular lifestyle and do not lose confidence!
Not even 300 days are left until college scholastic ability test. Short period as the days may be for testees that are left tense in pursuit of the goal, success in college entrance, 10 months in practice is never a short period. As they are demanded, students should maintain steady lifestyle of studying intensively and take rest bits by bits. For the conditions of body and mind that may go astray at any moment, let’s not forget that regular pattern of life and health management are just essential. Keeping up confidence is also a must. It is often the case that you may lose heart when you see poorer score than you expected after you had pressed on your study so hard. Just shake off a moment of anxiety and pick up your confident to push forward what you have planned, and that is going to become the foundation of determining the success in the 2011 college entrance.

1923 The Brislington Villa mystery – Montrose Avenue

Image by brizzle born and bred
In 1984 a surveyor from the city’s Environmental Health office made a call on an elderly gentleman living in Mendip Road, Bedminster to assess the property. The old chap seemed lonely and anxious to chat in common with many pensioners living alone but the story this man had to tell was a remarkable one.
During the time the officer was carrying out his survey he was to hear of startling events that had taken place 60 years before. The old man was called George Cooper and in January 1924 he was a leading figure in what the papers dubbed The Brislington Villa Mystery.
George’s father was also called George and together with his wife Louisa (aged 57) had lived in Montrose Avenue, Brislington for about 20 years at that time. Previously they had lived in Bedminster. They were, apparently, a quiet couple who ‘kept themselves to themselves’; an unremarkable pair, the wife invariably cheerful and often to be heard singing as she worked around the house.
There seems to have been a particular bond between mother and son. In fact they were described as being ‘wonderfully devoted’, their relationship more like brother and sister. George tended to call her ‘Gin’ rather than ‘Mother’. When George married a girl from Cheddar in 1921 the couple did what many newlyweds did in those days – they shared the parents’ house.
Within a year their first child, a little boy, was born. In 1923 another child was expected and George’s wife went to stay with her parents in the June, planning to return for her confinement in September but, in the event, she remained in Cheddar and her second boy was born there. She and the new baby remained there until 3 weeks before Christmas.
Meanwhile, George’s mother was looking after the older boy, whom she adored, at Montrose Avenue. Also resident in the house was a lodger, Aubrey Baker, who had lived there since October 1922 and was an engineer employed by the Bristol Tramways Company.
Both 37-year-old George and his father, who was 59, followed the same trade – that of pattern makers initially at Bartletts of Brislington who were scale makers but when these works closed down they both found similar employment at Sampson’s iron foundry at Malago Road, Bedminster.
So, on the surface, a respectable, hard-working family living in a pleasant suburban villa called Croydon House with French windows leading out to the garden, the windows hung with spotless curtains. A kitchen and scullery jutted out on to the garden where a chicken run had been constructed. Not all was as it seemed, though.
George Cooper senior was an inveterate womaniser. He seems to have had a taste for office cleaners. One liaison back in 1918 was with a woman engaged in such work at the tramways office where he was employed at the time. In 1923 he was enjoying a dalliance with a Mrs Goodman, charlady at Sampson’s who lived in South Street, Bedminster.
His wife was only too well aware of his philandering and had even confronted Mrs Goodman in her own home at one stage as well as making a complaint about her to Ernest Sampson her employer.
This seemed to arise out of a discovery that Mr Cooper had paid for his lady friend to go on a firm’s outing. Nor were his extra-marital affairs Louisa Cooper’s only problem. George was later to say that his father had always been an aggressive man who was not averse to subduing Louisa by means of violence and had been known to knock her to the ground and drag her to her feet by her hair. He had also been abusive to George himself when he tried to defend her.
Then, in September 1923, the situation changed. Mr Cooper was no longer seen setting off for work each day and returning when the mood took him. At first Mrs Cooper told neighbours that he had gone away to work but then she had to confess he had run off with a woman. Enquiries at Sampson’s as to the situation resulted in George saying he was certain his father would not be returning and it was agreed he could take over the older man’s job.
Autumn faded to winter and Christmas approached, one to anticipate with pleasure this year as there would be no arguments to disrupt the peaceful atmosphere. Friends and neighbours were invited round and George played tunes on the piano while everyone gathered round for a sing-song. It was probably the happiest Yuletide the family had ever experienced. Something was bothering George though, something gnawing at his conscience.
By the end of January 1924 he felt he had to confide in someone. The man he chose as his confessor was George Blackburn, his uncle on his mother’s side. The brother and sister were close and she came to visit him at least every other week.
George Cooper arrived at his uncle’s house in Sandown Road at about 8.30 on the evening of 29 January accompanied by his cousin, George Blackburn junior.
He said to his relatives that there had been one or two upsets and his father had gone then he added ‘I have put him in a position that he won’t come back again’. His auntie asked him to clarify this statement and was told ‘We had a row with father, and it had to be him or me’. Again she said ‘What do you mean to say, George?’ and he finally said ‘I killed my father’.
The Blackburns, burdened by this terrible knowledge had been placed in an untenable position. The following day the son decided to ask the advice of a friend of his, another George -George Paul who ran a fried fish shop in Redcliffe Hill. He was an ex-policeman.
He knew immediately that his only option was to inform the authorities and the following day, when George Cooper arrived home from work, he was cautioned and placed under arrest. His mother had already been charged with being an accessory after the fact in the murder of her husband.
Mother and son appeared the following morning in Keynsham Petty Sessional Court. The case for the prosecution was led by Mr A Sefton Cohen and Mr E J Watson defended both prisoners. A brief resume of their circumstances was given. In the press coverage of the day George Cooper is described as slimly built with light hair and dressed in a grey suit with a waistcoat, although he was not wearing a collar.
His mother was crying incessantly. In the event the pair were charged with murder because she denied the accessory charge immediately, saying ‘No, sir, I knew it. I knew what it was for’.
After the hearing Louisa was taken to Cardiff Gaol. As she was taken away she called to her son: ‘Have I got to leave you? Let me share it. It is my fault. It is my fault.’
Meanwhile, the police were searching the house and soon began paying particular interest to the middle downstairs room where George had been doing some repairs to the flooring after his mother had complained to Henry Poole, the landlord who lived in Chatsworth Road, that some joists needed replacing but ‘George would see to it himself. Mr Poole assumed it was her husband to whom she referred but a few days later the son called at his house with a similar story and was told to purchase some timber and put the trouble right and he would be recompensed. In the end he claimed the 17 shillings spent on wood but refused labour costs and money he had spent on the tar used to seal the ends of the joists.
On 10 January 1924 he officially took over the tenancy, saying he had heard nothing from his father.
At last the body of George William Cooper was discovered beneath the boards of the very room where his wife and son had celebrated Christmas with friends and neighbours to the accompaniment of many a well-loved tune on the piano, positioned over his ‘grave’. Those present at the soiree dined out on the tale for many years afterwards. An autopsy was ordered and marks on the skull carefully examined. The celebrated Sir Bernard Spilsbury was called in to give his esteemed opinion and the case prepared to go to trial.
The trial itself took place in Wells with a special charabanc hired to take police and witnesses there. The accused said in a clear voice ‘I am not guilty’. His mother, who had been bailed, looked strained, nervous and tearful. Mr Emmanuel, for the Crown, opened the proceedings by giving a brief background picture of the family ending with the information that the victim had been last seen by his friend, a man called Simms, on 6 September 1923 after they had spent some time on their allotments, paused for a glass of beer and then bidden each other ‘good night’ at about 8.00pm. Cooper was seen walking off in the direction of his home at that time.
The accused then took the stand, describing in detail the quarrel that had taken place that night over ‘a woman from Goodhind Street’ whom his father had threatened to move into the house after turning out his son. To calm himself he went into the other room and began to pick out a tune on the piano, then suddenly became aware his father had crept into the room armed with a hatchet. A fierce struggle then ensued of which the accused claimed to have little memory except that a black and red mist came down over his eyes. He then came to and found himself lying at right angles to his father who appeared to be dead.
When his mother returned later that evening he told her what had happened and the following day buried the body beneath the floorboards in the middle room. It was then the moment for Mr Emmanuel to discuss the head wounds, of which there were nine. If the jury were satisfied that these blows were rained on the victim by the man in the dock then, in law, that was murder. To reduce it to manslaughter he said ‘the onus of proof of justification lay with the prisoner’. There was also some dispute as to whether some of the marks had been made when actually removing the body from its temporary grave but this seemed unlikely in view of the forensic evidence. The skull was produced in court and Mrs Cooper held her handkerchief over her eyes.
None of the witnesses called seemed to have anything good to say about the deceased, describing him as surly, hasty-tempered and averse to any sort of criticism. He openly boasted about his conquests over women, even discussing a particular situation with the lodger, Aubrey Baker, when they were having a pint together one night in the Holly Bush.
He said ‘I am in a ***** fix. I have been getting about with another woman and I think my missus has found out’. Baker was shocked because he liked and admired Louisa Cooper whom he considered to be a good housewife and ‘one who attended to her home’. He thought too, that ‘young Cooper was a nice, quiet young fellow.’
George Blackburn, Louisa’s brother, recalled many times he had seen her sporting a black eye and had threatened Cooper with a good hiding. He said Cooper was a man who preferred throwing things rather than fighting and had been convicted in the past of throwing a brick at a man. He was frequently known to smash up crockery, musical instruments and ornaments in the house and was quite blatant about his extra-marital affairs, even once bringing a woman round to stay the night in the family home and insisted his wife wait on her. At length the jury retired on the Friday afternoon and it was announced that sentencing would take place on the Saturday.
The night must have been a tense one for both George and his mother, so it must have come as a welcome relief when to expiate his crime he was told he was sentenced to 7 years’ penal servitude. It was almost as if everyone had felt he had done a favour by ridding society of such an obnoxious man.
The house in Montrose Avenue still stands although the road has been renamed Montrose Park and the case is still spoken of by older residents who remember the family and the shock of hearing the tale of the degradation and misery suffered by the well-liked Mrs Cooper which finally tipped her son over the edge on the night of 6 September 1923, culminating in one of the most shocking suburban killings that Bristol had ever known.

½ cup of Organic Dairy Kefir or Plain Yogurt
1 level teaspoon of Spirulina or Grass Powder such as Wheat, Barley,Kamut or any Whole Super Food Green Powder.
1 level teaspoon of Lime or Lemon Juice
1 dollop of raw unfiltered Honey
A pinch of Curry Powder
NOTE: Stir well and taste , You may like it as it is ? Or you can make your necessary adjustments to suite your taste with the above ingredients until that knowing smile spreads across your face from ear to ear.
Remember YOU are Gourmet ! So keep in mind that everyones taste buds are different .
I remember more than 30 years ago when I made my first holiday trip to exotic Thailand , that some of the Thai dishes would burn my mouth off to the amusement of my friends .
Also one Thai man from the North East up country (on a dare) ate a big hand full of RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS with a big smile on his face, with out flinching , not one bat of an eye no negative reaction what so ever just every one standing and sitting at the table waiting quietly. The Thai man from the North East just seemed to enjoy it, as every one around the table laughed to my disbelief and amazement.
I could never or want to do what that Thai man did , but over the years my taste buds did change to fancy hot peppery foods but I also noticed on my more natural adopted whole food diet that my taste buds opened up or became awakened ,to the tastes of Sour, Sweet, Salty, Bitter, Tart, and all the flavors in between.
And to top it all off there is one fruit that for years absolutely put the death of fear into my taste buds? And that King of all fruits is the controversial DURIAN.
The taste and smell is so bad to many Westerners, and even some Asians that this fruit is publicly banned from Hotels, Airports,Train and Bus stations or any where that people will gather . And I never see it anywhere on restaurant menus.
For Durian I will later give more detailed Recipes and Health benefits and information guides on one of my future articles. I consider the Durian Fruit with all her spikes to be the most misunderstood and unappreciated natural food on planet Earth.
I never thought that I would ever say it “Dare I say it “One of my most favorite fruits for Good taste and Good Health is Durian!
Today I realize over time that commercially processed foods tasted less appealing to me, and that eating according to NATURE brought back the natural taste to my mouth , and that like others I am sure discovered the goodness and freshness of whole food cuisine ( much of it RAW supported with the Power of Natural Enzymes) to excite , and to bring new meaning to Natural Living , and Abundance of Good Health.
“Back to the Recipe Method”
Pour your mixture onto a plate and dip your health bread into it and with a fork turn the bread over to cover the other side.
Place your coated health bread on a new plate.
Thinly slice one cumber and a hand full of cherrie tomatoes and layer them over your open face sandwich Health Bread.
Optional: To make your bread more spicy and hot you can sprinkle garlic and chili pepper over top.
Your Simple Salad Method:
Collect a handful of your favorite fresh green salad greens and herbs ,give them a good water soak and rinse then with a kitchen knife mince them fine over your cutting board.
Add your greens to a mixing bowl
Add I level teaspoon of Lime of Lemon Juice
Add 1 level teaspoon of Raw Apple Cider Vinegar
Add a bit of Raw Unfiltered Honey
Add one level teaspoon of Virgin Cold pressed Olive Oil
Toss the Salad and place beside your Health Bread
Add a Lemon or Lime wedge with a few raw Walnuts in the photo or your favorite nuts?
Method for your Salad Pudding:
Your left over Salad Mix ,Cucumbers ,Cherrie Tomatoes, and a few walnut halves can be added to your bowl and sprinkled with Bee Pollen .( Natures Whole Food Vitamin & Mineral supplement)
Serve and Enjoy

“What about Bread & What is considered Health Bread ? “
Most people around the world eat bread , of all kinds at home, at work, in restaurants, schools, airports, hotels, and bakeries,or just about everywhere you can see.
So why do we have a LOVE AFFAIR with Bread?
We have been eating this processed food for centuries and its ingrained into our society and culture today, but a few people notably Holistic Educators and Doctors, Health Advocates, and people in the know have started to look at commercially industrialized bread in a new light .
The bread of yesterday used a much slower and natural method of production, using whole grains, sourdough starters, easts and local herbs.
It is important to note that also the top soils of then where more fertile producing grains of superior nutrition .
Today much of our processed grains are grown on infertile soil that is amended with commercial fertilizers and the grain crop will be most likely treated with pesticides and herbicides on a massive factory scale. Then these grains will be further stripped of nutrients such as the bran, the germ, and the Embryo . The EMBRYO is the essential LIFE FORCE of any seed, legume, nut, grain or plant and even ourselves.
The only thing left is the grains starchy endosperm that is ground into a long shelf life of lifeless dead flour, then later on is consumed by a Living Human Being for what I may ask?
And to top it off the commercial bread makers will add synthetic stabilizers and conditioners that only a rocket scientist would understand. Please keep in mind that some countries will ban the use of certain commercial bread ingredients while other countries think its OK to use . Many commercial synthetic stabilizers and conditioners are banned today in many industrialized countries but used today in developing countries that do not have Government regulation and label enforcement laws.
So what can one do to protect one self ? How can a Bread Lover protect him or her self from such a starchy denatured food item we call Bread today?
Before I give you my best answer to this dilemma I need to address one more important thing.
Most breads today contain wheat which contains GLUTEN from the Latin word “Glue”,
a protein in grains such as Wheat.Wheat related grain species that include Gluten would include Barley,Rye,Kamut,Triticale, and to a lesser extent due to the cross breading of grains Oats.
But not to worry, there is a way to eat the above grains in a safe effective way that never stops me from consuming them on occasion.
That way is through SPROUTING.
What happens when you take a Glutenous Grain and expose it to Air, Water, and Darkness?
A wonderful Life giving phenomenon occurs, forcing the grain to give up its protective enzyme inhibiters ,to release its Gluten, and to germinate its empro ,helping the grain to sprout into a small plant. For instance Wheat berries contain gluten as a grain ,but much less as a sprout ,and non at all as living grass.
Whole wheat bread, contains 3 times more fiber than enriched white bread , but that does not tell us a whole lot when you consider that the refined milled flour is a simple starchy carbohydrate lacking in the essential vitamin E and the Mineral Magnesium among others that supports our immunity . Bread is classified as a simple refined carbohydrate substance that in my opinion cannot be considered real food for sustainable good health.
The Gluten proteins in the above mentioned grains ,cannot be properly digested in people that are afflicted with the disease called CELIAC. Celiac is not easy to diagnose, and many adults today go on with their lives eating Gluten grains in their diet with out symptoms but may still exhibit allergies to the protein.
Continued use of the grains , can cause internal damage to a persons digestive system , causing melabsorption of nutrients, and inflamation of the small intestine. The best way to relieve this problem is to stop eating Gluten Grains including the consumption of commercial bread products and to eat Non Gluten Grains instead.
Non Gluten Grains would include, Amaranth,Buckwheat,Corn,Millet, Quinoa,Rice (Preferably Brown) Sorghum,Teff, and Wild Rice.
When you add seeds, legumes, and nuts to the list above it is not hard to imagine the multitude of delicious Recipes that can be made from this list.
One more point to make that just may raise your eye brows a little? I know mine are raised.
GMO (Genetically Modified Organisms ) are primarily in most commercially processed packaged foods that are not labeled what so ever.So by purchasing and consuming commercial bread products you could be unwittingly eating GMO as well.
Bread is really another name used to describe a CAKE. The difference between Cake and Bread is very little when you think about it.
They can be shaped in any manner and both use milled flours, salt, butter or commercial fats, coloring agents, raising agents and the list goes on.
I tell all my Clients wanting to lose excess weight , and for maintaining good health to reduce or eliminate for a time, bread of any kind all together.
OK before all the Commercial Bread Bakers out there start flaming my Email inbox , I will give you my best advise for purchasing your bread product.
For myself I eat bread only on occasion as my diet is primarily whole unprocessed grains.
Sprouted, milled in my country kitchen, and planted in my garden. Most people do not have the time and know how to make their own bread so hear goes.
Barry Gourmet,s Tips for Bread:
Stay away from large mega grocery stores for your bread needs.
These stores will cater to the large food giants , selling white breads, whole wheat breads that may be white breads loaded with caramel food coloring agents to make them look like whole wheat bread. If the ingredient list is long ,put the bread back on the shelf.
If you are shopping in this kind of store look for the family owned bread business , with a proper label adding up to 100 % showing more whole grain ingredients and less flour.
Look for sprouted breads, Dark Sourdough breads ,Multi grain breads,Gluten Free Breads. Breads that use Molasess , Sea Salt, Whole nuts, seeds and Sprouted Grains is a good sign. Some of the Sprouted Breads that are in Health Food Store coolers are a good bet.
Shop for breads at Whole Health Food stores instead , but also support your local bakery
that specializes in whole grain bread production as well. Ask questions to your local baker about how the bread is made and what ingredients go into the making of their bread?
Be proactive about your bread. After all bread has been a stable food for generations, let
us choose our breads wisely , for better health.

Choosing Apples

Millions of apples.. apples for free…
There is a really amazing story behind the farm. This is the same
farm that produces the red Washington apples that are sold in the
supermarket. In singapore, Fuji apples are more popular and according
to the apple farmer – uncle bob – that is reasonable because fuji
apples in actually better than washington apples in terms of taste.
However Washington apples are popular in the States (due to
protection laws that prevent china apples from coming in) and also in
China (where they like all things american and red)
The farmer is the only asian farmer here, and he has been growing
apples for more than 30 years. He was actually a military man
previously who fought in the 2nd world war as well as the vietnam
war. However after serving the army, he was disillusioned with the
politics if the States, and wanted to live in a rural area, and went
into apple farming which was lucrative then in the 70s. He basically
didnt know anything about farming nor about apples at all. So
basically he started the farming business at age 50. The banks
wouldnt even lend him money. But his wife had an MBA, and the banks
would lend her money, and that was how they started.
Uncle Bob is now 80+ years old and he can still carry 2 boxes of
apples easily, and is very healthy. His wife Anita is in her 60s and
also still in great health. They gave me some tips – and said that
they juice 2 apples and 2 peaches and whatever fruits that are in
season into the blender. Regarding the oranges – they grind the SKIN
- which holds 80% of the nutrients onto the blend and then drink it
up. Uncle Bob drinks 2 glasses and Anita drinks a glass, and they do
this every morning.
Do you know that apples that we get is already 1 year old? It is last
year’s harvest which they keep in climate and atmosphere controlled
cold rooms. This is an invention that came from the oil industry
which was adapted to the apple farm to keep the fruits fresh.

With Uncle Bob

I have a lot of respect for this old guy – the only asian farmer in Yakima, who grows the Washington apples that we we eat. He is one tenacious bulldog.
